NFC Championship Game Betting Tips Explained

Few outside of Georgia would have predicted a NFC Championship Game appearance for Atlanta this season, but the Falcons have – so far – erased any notes that they ‘choke’ under the bright lights by not only winning their division but also beating the Seattle Seahawks in the post-season. Matt Ryan has finally lived up to the ‘Matty Ice’ nickname when it mattered most and his number one-ranked offense are now within touching distance of Super Bowl LI. Will they fall at the final hurdle?

The Green Bay Packers are in red-hot form right now. They ‘ran the table’ to make the post-season and the heroics of Aaron Rodgers then lifted them to a wildcard win over the New York Giants. The best was yet to come though, as the Packers knocked out the number one seed Dallas Cowboys at AT&T Stadium in the Divisional Round. With the two teams locked on 31-31 with just 35 seconds to go, Rodgers hit Ty Montgomery and Jared Cook for two crucial completions that set up Mason Crosby’s 51-yard game-winning field goal.

The Packers exploits have got everyone talking, but I expect their run to come to an end. Atlanta have a two-headed monster at running back – Devonta Freeman and Tevin Coleman – and in the passing game Ryan has a couple of outstanding talents in Julio Jones and Mohamed Sanu who should cause all sorts of problems for this poor Packers secondary. They have been racking up yards and points all season long and I do not expect that to stop here because this Green Bay defense has been struggling to keep their opponents off the board.

Rodgers will do his best to keep his team in the game – after all, that Atlanta defense is hardly great – but number 12 has no running game to support his efforts and that offensive line is hardly impressive. Just like the first meeting this season, this should turn into a shootout with Atlanta taking the honours. Devonta Freeman can play his part by adding to the team-leading 13 touchdowns he has scored this season, while I also expect Julio Jones to have another big day against a Green Bay defense that has struggled mightily in the passing game and was let off by a number of key drops in the Wildcard win over New York.

NFC Championship Game Stats

These two teams have met 31 times over the years and Green Bay hold a slight series advantage, having won 17 of those meetings while losing to the Falcons on 14 occasions. There have been three meetings in the post-season and the Packers have the edge at 2-1, having won their most recent playoff encounter back in 2011. They went on to win the Super Bowl.

These two teams have met once already this season and it turned into a 65-point classic that saw Atlanta edge it by a single point. That victory ended their four-game losing run against Green Bay, a team they have not beaten in the post-season since 2003 when they beat a Brett Favre-led team 27-7 on Wildcard Weekend.
