With the NFL hitting Wembley Stadium once again this weekend, it is perhaps fitting to see bookmaker William Hill making Colin Kaepernick/NFL Knee-Takers the favourites to win the TIME Magazine Person of the Year this year.

Kaepernick first grabbed the headlines when he sat down for the national anthem prior to a pre-season game in 2016, later telling reporters he was doing it out of protest against racial inequality in the United States.

That decision made him a polarising figure in the National Football League and the United States as a whole, and despite insisting he would not continue his campaign during the 2017 season the quarterback has not been picked up by another team since leaving the San Francisco 49ers.

Many believe that is solely down to the campaign he started, but more and more players have joined in with the protests as each week has passed, and this past weekend the #TakeAKnee campaign became the talk of the sporting world as players, coaches, owners and officials across the NFL produced a show of unity in the wake of an attack by president Donald Trump, who suggested players should be fired for not standing during the anthem.

“Wouldn’t you love to see one of these NFL owners, when somebody disrespects our flag, to say, ‘Get that son of a bitch off the field right now. Out! He’s fired. He’s fired!’” Trump said.

So with the campaign Kaepernick started now bigger than ever, bookmaker William Hill believe he could scoop an award in the form of the TIME Magazine Person Of The Year gong – which was won by President Trump in 2016. The former San Francisco quarterback is now the 2/1 favourite, with Trump next up at 3/1 ahead of  Kim Jong Un at 4/1.

“Colin Kaepernick has been shunned from a very lucrative career for standing up for what he believes in and a large number of his former colleagues and competitors have followed suit,” William Hill spokesman Joe Crilly told USFootballTips.com. “It would be quite the irony for him or them to win the TIME Magazine accolade the year after Donald Trump.”

Latest William Hill odds:

TIME Magazine Person of the Year 2017: 2/1 Colin Kaepernick/NFL knee takers; 3/1 Donald Trump; 4/1 Kim Jong Un; 8/1 Angela Merkel; 9/1 Vladimir Putin; 14/1 Elon Musk; 14/1 Pope Francis; 14/1 Xi Jinping; 16/1 Barack Obama; 16/1 Hwang Kyo-Ahn; 16/1 Jean Claude Junker; 20/1 Marine Le Pen; 33/1 George R.R. Martin; 33/1 Michelle Obama; 33/1 Serena Williams; 33/1 Tom Brady; 40/1 Ban Ki-Moon; 40/1 Francois Fillon; 66/1 Jeremy Corbyn; 66/1 Theresa May
